June 24, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

For those of you feeling completely helpless and depressed by the BP oil spill, never fear there is something you can do! This Saturday, June 26th, is “Hands Across The Sand,” an event taking place on beaches across the world to say “NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.” To participate, all you… [read more]

What if the BP oil spill happened here?

June 21, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

On June 12th, I spent the most amazing day out on the ocean. The water was a magical blue, so blue that it almost didn’t seem real. How can the ocean be such an amazing blue I kept wondering. My eyes were riveted, I just kept staring into the beautiful blue depths. The boat was… [read more]

David Helvarg: blue is the new green

June 10, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

I celebrated World Oceans Day by going to a talk at Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and had the chance to listen to David Helvarg speak. Helvarg is a passionate advocate for the ocean, the author of several books and president of the Blue Frontier Campaign. His talk launched with a reading from his new book… [read more]

Balloon trash is no joke

June 7, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

I was going to lay off the topic of balloon trash for awhile, but then I walked out my front door this morning and one of the first things I see is a discarded balloon lying on the ground in front of the building next door. That is just too much of a coincidence to… [read more]

The truth about Malibu

June 3, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 3 Comments

Recently there was an article in the Los Angeles Times hailing Malibu as environmentally friendly for being one of the few California cities to pass a plastic bag ban. But don’t be fooled, Malibu is a serious environmental offender. It’s a little known fact that one of the reasons Malibu became a city was to… [read more]

Balloons will become ocean trash

June 2, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

Well, I’m very bummed to report that despite receiving calls from many people requesting that no balloons be released during the ceremony on Memorial Day, Green Hills Memorial Park went ahead and released 1,500 balloons anyway. A friend who attended the ceremony reported that one of the speakers commented the balloons were floating inland and… [read more]

Thoughts on Memorial Day and balloons

May 28, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

Memorial Day was first observed May 30, 1868 to honor those who fought and died during the Civil War. According to the U.S. Memorial Day website, this was done by placing flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Obviously, a lot has changed since 1868. Now Memorial Day is… [read more]

Death by fishing net

May 21, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

Fishing nets are designed to catch and kill fish, I get it. But a fishing net is supposed to be used by fishermen, I mean fisherpeople, to catch fish and then it’s supposed to be removed from the ocean until next time. But alas, all too often fishing nets become a unique weapon of mass… [read more]

Mysterious dolphin skin burn healing

May 18, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

A few weeks ago I wrote about two bottlenose dolphins suffering from a mysterious skin burn and thankfully both are still alive and kicking or I mean swimming. The cow/calf pair, Wave and Tallula, have been monitored closely by researchers and dolphin enthusiasts near Adelaide and both dolphins are on the mend. What caused the… [read more]
