Western Gulls Nest on Anacapa Island

June 1, 2017 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

One of the best parts of my mini-adventure to Anacapa Island was having the opportunity to see tons of nesting western gulls. Towards the end of April, thousands of western gulls flock to the island to mate and lay eggs. Incubating the eggs takes about one month and our trip was scheduled to coincide with… [read more]

The year of the injured bird

January 4, 2015 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

The year 2014 has come and gone and soon the year of the horse will come to a close as the Chinese New Year ushers in the year of the sheep on February 19. For me, I’m just hoping the year of the injured bird is over. One of my 2014 New Year’s resolutions was… [read more]

Update on Pink the mutilated brown pelican

May 31, 2014 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

Great news, Pink the brown pelican has fully recovered from a severe mutilated pouch wound! After two operations that lasted a total of six hours and involved hundreds of stitches, it’s almost impossible to see the scar and Pink looks good as new (see photo). “Over the course of treatment, I’ve seen Pink transform from… [read more]

Be an intern for the birds

March 22, 2014 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

International Bird Rescue (IBR) is looking for a few good interns! This is a great opportunity for students interested in biology, wildlife preservation, environmental conservation and of course…birds. Being a bird isn’t so easy these days. Despite possessing the gift of flight, birds still have to spend many hours on land resting, foraging, nesting, preening… [read more]

Amazing bird photos by Jennifer MaHarry

January 4, 2014 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

This weekend is your last chance to see the Nature LA: Birds of Prey exhibit at the G2 Gallery in Venice. Drop everything you’re doing and go! The photos are truly amazing, but I have to admit I am slightly biased because the photographer, Jennifer MaHarry, is a good friend. In the past, her G2… [read more]

Pigeons nesting the creative way

June 13, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

Recently, as I was standing near the beach I happened to notice a very busy pigeon flying back and forth mining the parking islands for choice mulch twigs and pieces of bark. After observing this for awhile, I realized it was a pigeon pair preparing their “love nest” together. Their single-mindedness was impressive. Even though… [read more]

Don’t trim trees during spring

May 8, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

Spring is the time of year when many of the birds and the bees are getting busy with the birds and the bees. This means our feathered friends are finding choice places up high to build nests away from predators and prying eyes. After industriously collecting construction materials and layering twig upon twig just so,… [read more]

California Wildlife Center recipes

May 2, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

It’s time to share a couple more things about the California Wildlife Center that didn’t make my last post. As part of the tour, we had the chance to visit the hospital area and see recovering baby humming birds and mourning doves that were so cute. We also saw where volunteers check in to find… [read more]

The California Wildlife Center is amazing!

I had the chance to visit the California Wildlife Center during their recent Open House and was completely blown away by all the amazing work they do. The Center is located about halfway between Malibu and Calabasas off Malibu Canyon Road. It’s tucked away in the middle of the woods surrounded by hills and greenery,… [read more]
