My best blue whale photo

September 21, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

With all the blue whale mania off the coast of Los Angeles and more specifically near Redondo Beach, I’ve been fortunate to have the chance to serve as a naturalist on a few whale watching trips. I always take my camera along hoping for the best shot ever, but since I’m not a professional photographer… [read more]

Remember the Marine Mammal Protection Act

September 16, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

Blue whale watching off the coast of Los Angeles has brought much excitement, but also much craziness. As with all things where humans get into the mix, some whale watching off the coast of Southern California has gotten out of control. I was appalled to learn from Captain Brad Sawyer, who expertly steers the Voyager… [read more]

More great blue whale watching

September 5, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

Yesterday started with another amazing blue whale watching trip. Twenty whale watch naturalists boarded the Voyager in Redondo Beach and headed out to sea despite extremely low visibility. There was a thick marine layer making everything really hazy. It was so bad that once we were further offshore I had absolutely no idea where we… [read more]

Blue whale poop is red

September 3, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 5 Comments

I know what you are thinking, why on earth would anyone want to capture blue whale poop? But when it comes to science and knowing more about whales, anything goes. The blue whale poop in the photo was scooped up by Eric Martin, Facility Director & Educational Co-Director at the Roundhouse Aquarium. He then threw… [read more]

Blue whales everywhere off Los Angeles

September 1, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

If you have never seen a blue whale and you happen to live in the Los Angeles area, then it’s time to go whale watching! There are blue whales everywhere off the coast right now feeding on mass amounts of krill. On Sunday I went whale watching on the Spirit based in San Pedro and… [read more]

Top 5 favorite scientific names

August 13, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

In general, scientific names drive me nuts because they are impossible to remember, impossible to spell and rarely make sense. But I have to admit there are some great ones. Every scientific name starts with the Genus the animal belongs to followed by the name of that particular species. As I’ve become more familiar with… [read more]

Pilot whale says cheese

August 12, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

This photo made my day so I had to pass it along. According to a story on Telegraph.co.uk, the photo was taken by marine biologist Rory Moore during a dive off the Strait of Gibraltar. It was Moore’s impression that this pod of pilot whales had little contact with humans and were extra curious. The… [read more]

Check out the flukes on this whale!

August 11, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

I was just perusing my photos from the last whale watching adventure and noticed this one. Somehow is slipped past me on the first run through. This is a shot of a humpback whale’s flukes and yes flukes is plural. I always found this strange because the word tail isn’t plural so why would flukes… [read more]

My take on the whale landing on yacht incident

July 29, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

I realize I’m weighing in on this story a tad late, since the actual incident happened on July 18, off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. But since this story continues to live on the internet I think it’s still fair game. We’ll never know what the whale was thinking since we still haven’t… [read more]

Great whale watching near Santa Barbara!

July 26, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

Wow, whale watching off Santa Barbara’s coast is amazing right now. On Saturday, ACS/LA hosted their Summertime Blues Whale Watch Adventure aboard the Condor Express and we watched whales galore lunge feeding on mass amounts of krill in the Santa Barbara Channel. Every where we looked there was either a humpback whale or a blue… [read more]
