Scorpionfish…don’t touch!

July 1, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

Don’t touch the spines on a scorpionfish or Scorpaena guttata. (And here I thought that nothing rhymes with with the famous Lion King phrase- Hakuna matata.) It’s called a scorpionfish for a reason. The sharp spines within its fins are poisonous and the toxin is effective even after the fish is dead. Talk about an… [read more]

Okay, so the photos aren’t exactly graphic, but you get to see her glorious fluorescent orange eggs. That orange… [read more]

Hagfish: things that make you go eew

June 23, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

I was recently introduced to the Pacific hagfish, a little known creature that inhabits mud on the ocean floor near Baja California all the way up the coast to Alaska. This was one of the many creatures caught on the Cabrillo Aquarium’s “Catalina Above and Below” trip off Los Angeles’ coast. As you can tell… [read more]

What if the BP oil spill happened here?

June 21, 2010 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

On June 12th, I spent the most amazing day out on the ocean. The water was a magical blue, so blue that it almost didn’t seem real. How can the ocean be such an amazing blue I kept wondering. My eyes were riveted, I just kept staring into the beautiful blue depths. The boat was… [read more]
