Now is the time for gray whale watching

March 23, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

People keep asking me, “Are there still enough gray whales migrating for whale watching?” The answer is a definitive yes! While we are getting closer to the end of the “normal” migration time frame, for some reason the gray whales are traveling north later this year. Why? You would have to ask the gray whales… [read more]

Video of Caribbean lobster migration

March 17, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

This is a really cool video of the Caribbean lobster migration that I found on YouTube. The Caribbean lobster is also a spiny lobster, similar to my favorite California spiny lobster. And of course, Caribbean spiny lobsters are also fished and are more common in local restaurants than the California spiny lobster. If you ever… [read more]

More fish kill photos

March 14, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

I received requests to post more photos of the fish kill. So here they are. If you are tired of seeing photos of dead fish, definitely ignore this post. But first a quick update: The latest Los Angeles Times article on the King Harbor Marina fish kill in Redondo Beach details that the sardines tested… [read more]

My first tsunami watch

March 12, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 4 Comments

Wow, another first took place yesterday making this a record week of firsts. My first tsunami evacuation and watch. Upon pulling into the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium entrance, I was greeted by police caution tape and an LAPD officer who said the aquarium was being evacuated for the tsunami advisory. Several people headed for the end… [read more]

My first fish kill

March 10, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

This is a week of firsts, my first grunion run and now my first fish kill. The grunion didn’t show, but the dead fish sure did. I was supposed to be the naturalist for the whale watching trip on the Voyager this afternoon, but alas, it was canceled because not enough people purchased tickets. So… [read more]

My first grunion run

March 10, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

I almost forgot to write about my first grunion run! On Monday, March 7th, I ventured down to Cabrillo Aquarium for the first grunion run of the season, which was predicted to occur sometime between 10:25pm and 12:25pm. This time frame is based on when the highest tide of the night rolls in carrying grunion… [read more]

Thoughts on Redondo Beach fish kill

March 9, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

A mass die off of sardines at King Harbor Marina in Redondo Beach is making headlines across the country. But what happened? The answer seems to depend on who you talk to. Some news reports suggest that high winds blew the massive school of sardines into King Harbor. Several local marine biologists I’ve spoken to… [read more]

Fun anecdote about California sea lions

March 7, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

Recently, I was cleaning my desk and going through stacks of papers and discovered the interview notes from my very first article on California sea lions. Wow, time flies, I wrote the first column for Easy Reader almost two years ago! For that first story, I interviewed Fullerton College professor and California sea lion researcher… [read more]

Better photo of the mantis shrimp

March 3, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

I got lucky and happened to catch the mantis shrimp out of his burrow. This photo gives you a little bit better idea of what he looks like. Check out the royal blue legs, no tights necessary! He’s definitely not shy about checking me out either, but with his “hammer arm,” I guess he doesn’t… [read more]

Bottlenose dolphin with cool white splashes of color

March 2, 2011 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

On a recent whale watching trip off the coast of Los Angeles, an unusual looking bottlenose dolphin surfaced. One of the naturalists on board got this great shot! This is actually a calf because in another photo there’s a much larger dolphin right next to him, most likely the mom. And the pair is traveling… [read more]
