Saving Super Bowl seats is for the birds

February 3, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

This morning I went for a hike at Point Dume in Malibu and came across this group of birds just hanging out. The waves rolled in and they would just watch. Sometimes when the waves came too close for comfort they would scoot back a bit and resume doing nothing. It seemed like they were… [read more]

Saving sharks one photo at a time

February 1, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

It’s time to talk sharks! Sharks are very misunderstood creatures. Thanks to the movie Jaws and its haunting theme song, very few people are able to see sharks clearly anymore. Sharks are just really cool fish trying to survive in the big blue ocean and in the process have had some nasty encounters with humans.… [read more]

Staring into the eyes of an albatross

January 29, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

Yesterday I saw this photo of a Laysan albatross on Facebook posted by International Bird Rescue and I couldn’t stop staring at it. There’s something almost mystical about an albastross’ eyes; they look like black pools of wisdom that contain the secrets to the universe. This stunning bird was released over the weekend by the… [read more]

Whale watching on the sand

January 27, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

I had a great time whale watching this weekend! Okay, so maybe it wasn’t whale watching exactly…I had the chance to see a life-size Pacific gray whale made out of sand at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Whale Fiesta. And this sand sculpture was very accurate. As you can see in the photo this gray whale had… [read more]

Dog owner and poop catcher extraordinaire

January 17, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

Last night, my husband and I were in the car headed to an event. As we were waiting at a red light, I happened to look to my right and saw a couple walking their English bulldog. The bulldog was on a leash and seemed to be checking out the grass while his owners patiently… [read more]

One thing you can do for the oceans

January 13, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft Leave a Comment

In case anyone missed this last week, there is actually one simple thing you can do to help the oceans: Stop using face wash or body wash with plastic micro beads. Unilever made a big announcement last week that the company is phasing out the use of plastic micro beads in personal care products by… [read more]

What makes a green sea anemone green?

January 8, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 1 Comment

What makes a green sea anemone green? It’s not green with envy, it’s green with algae! Single-celled algae living in the tissue of this sea anemone contribute in an indirect way to its brilliant green color. Green sea anemones or Anthopleura xanthogrammica enjoy the nutritional benefits gained from hosting algae through photosynthesis. In return, algae… [read more]

Reflecting on the holidays and plastic

January 3, 2013 by Carolyn Kraft 6 Comments

Another holiday season has come and gone, but plastic holiday decorations, knick knacks and gifts will live on for hundreds of years and then some. I started thinking about plastic and the holidays shopping for my nephews and niece’s Christmas presents. Walking bewildered through the toy department, I was overwhelmed by all the plastic. Pretty… [read more]
