Enjoying the view at Griffith Observatory

October 18, 2012 by Carolyn Kraft 2 Comments

View from Griffith Observatory

Last weekend I headed to Griffith Observatory. It was a gorgeous day, with great panoramic views of Los Angeles, blue skies and perfect weather. For me, that was just a bonus though because I was there on a mission. All I really wanted to see was their latest and greatest show in the planetarium called Time’s Up.

If you haven’t been to the Griffith Observatory planetarium, you have to go! It’s so cool…the whole ceiling is a screen and it transforms into the night sky as a live person narrates a story. The chairs lean back so you are looking straight up as you’re transported to another world, all this for only $7 ($5 for members). Since the show Time’s Up opened in May, I’ve wanted to see it.

Time’s Up is about the Maya Calendar and what’s really going to happen on December 21, 2012, the alleged end of the world. Everyone is always talking about this calendar, the Maya Calendar this, the Maya Calendar that, what is the big deal? Well, it turns out…SPOILER ALERT…it’s just a super cool calendar made a long, long time ago. The calendar does not predict the end of the world, it just happens to end on December 21, 2012, meaning they didn’t bother to keep counting. Of course, the show goes into a lot more detail, but that’s the gist. But go and see it yourself, you’ll also get to learn about the Big Bang and so much more. You’ll also leave feeling confident about booking vacations for next year.

It’s been YERAS since I was at the observatory. You are right, I got to pay a visit soon. I expect to see some starry, starry nights on the tundra. However, it will be less comfortable since I will be standing up. With the expected freezing night temperature, it may feel like the end of the world for me.
