Ocean Wild Things

Lazy summer days

Northern elephant seal sleeping

This photo pretty much sums up how I’ve been feeling lately.

What is it about summer that makes you just want to lay in the grass, close your eyes and soak in the sun?

My blog calls me, dust collects on my bookshelves, my social media posts are outdated, the mail pile grows, but I don’t really feel like doing much of anything. What can I say? Summer energy has permeated every cell of my body and it’s like herding cats over here to get anything done.

It hasn’t even been that hot in Los Angeles, so I can’t use heat as in excuse. Take it easy summer! Some of us need to get some work done.

As far as the Northern elephant seal in the photo, this was taken on my last trip to Piedras Blancas. About 20 male elephant seals had found a beach just north of the main rookery and were just lying around without a care in the world. Most likely, these males had unsuccessfully attempted to enter the rookery and lost to the dominant male. Or they were resting up for a future attempt at entering the rookery. Either way it wasn’t related to summer energy, this photo was taken at the end of January.

Love Elephant Seals. They are so lumbering and nonchalant about almost everything. I miss Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal rookery. If I have time, love to head up there for a visit and drop in on my favorite US city, San Francisco.
