Great time to see elephant seals

Elephant seals everywhere at Piedras Blancas

Now is the perfect time to go see the elephant seals! December through March is breeding and birthing time for Northern elephant seals and according to the Friends of the Elephant Seal website the peak birthing time is the middle of January. So that means this coming weekend is the best time to visit Piedras Blancas along the central coast of California.

Last year, I went with a friend to Piedras Blancas at the end of January and we arrived too late to witness any births. But we still saw plenty of action, hundreds of elephant seals making tons of noise on the beach. Males fighting, females arguing, females nursing, subadult males sneaking into harems and pups squealing. It was one of the most amazing spectacles I’ve ever seen.

If you have some spare time this coming weekend, definitely check out the action, this is one show you don’t want to miss! (Visit the Friends of the Elephant Seal website for directions on how to get to the rookery north of Cambria.)
